The famous Bundeli folk dance, Baredi, has captivated tourists at the 38th Surajkund International Crafts Mela. This mesmerizing dance, blending tradition, devotion, and enthusiasm, has left audiences mesmerised. Baredi dance is an integral part of the rich folk dance tradition of Bundelkhand, performed mainly at religious and cultural events.
The dancers, dressed as Lord Krishna and his companions, recreate glimpses of Krishna’s childhood, enchanting the audience. Tourists at Surajkund Mela applauded and liked the performance.
The Mela showcases India's artistic diversity, and Baredi has emerged as not just entertainment but also a celebration of Indian heritage and tradition. This year, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha are the theme States of the event.
People dancing to the tunes of sarangi at Surajkund
Ramnath from Kaithal has been captivating audiences with his soulful sarangi tune. He engages audiences with his performances including historical stories like Heer-Ranjha and Meera, as well as folk songs celebrating Haryana’s heritage.
Ramnath, a resident of Kaithal district further shared that he has been performing at the Surajkund Crafts Mela since he was 20 years old keeping the folk art alive. He said that the state government is coming forward in preserving its culture and also expressed gratitude to Chief Minister, Sh. Nayab Singh Saini.
He said the government is making efforts for safeguarding cultural heritage. He also suggested youth to engage in art and culture as it will help them to stay away from negative influences like substance abuse.
Gajender Phogat’s Electrifying Performance at Surajkund
Renowned Haryanvi artist Gajender Phogat enthralled the audience at the Badi Chaupal stage with a spectacular musical evening. His lively performance of Haryanvi, Punjabi, and Hindi songs had the crowd cheering.
The Surajkund Mela continues to host remarkable performances by artists from India and abroad, organised under the aegis of Haryana Tourism Corporation and the Art and Cultural Affairs Department.
Phogat expressed his gratitude to Haryana Chief Minister, Sh. Nayab Singh Saini and Tourism Minister, Dr. Arvind Sharma for the excellent arrangements at the Mela.
Sculpture competition at the art and cultural gallery
A sculpture competition at the International Crafts Mela is providing young artists with an opportunity to hone their sculpting skills. More than 20 participants are competing in the event, which will continue until February 21, 2025.
Art and Culture Officer (Sculpture) Sh. Hirday Kaushal shared that the competition is being organised under the guidance of Commissioner, Dr. Amit Agrawal, Director General, Sh. K.M. Pandurang, and Additional Director, Sh. Vivek Kalia. Young sculptors are learning intricate techniques to refine their craftsmanship.
Renowned comedians, Gaurav Gupta and Khyali entertained the audience with their stand up comedy. Their witty performances, infused with relatable humor, had spectators laughing throughout the evening at Badi Chaupal.
Wooden Gulak a hit among visitors
Craftsmen at Surajkund Mela are drawing significant attention with their handcrafted products. One of the standout attractions this year is the Gulak (piggy bank) made up of wood rather than clay is witnessing high sales, particularly among children and families.
Surajkund Mela remains a grand platform for artisans to showcase their craftsmanship. Stalls from across India and abroad feature a variety of handcrafted items, including pottery, textiles, paintings, and home decor.
Managing Director, Haryana Tourism Corporation, Dr. Sunil Kumar, General Manager, Sh. Ashutosh Rajan and other officers along with a large number of visitors also remained present on the occasion.
