Guru Nanak Dev University has taken a significant step towards fulfilling the dreams of students from border and rural areas by providing them with big opportunities to study at the university with five percent incresement in seats. This landmark decision was made during the Syndicate meeting of the university held today in the Syndicate Room of the University.

Presiding over his first meeting, Vice Chancellor Prof. Karamjeet Singh emphasized his commitment to ensuring that children from these underprivileged regions receive access to higher education. To achieve this, a three-member committee was constituted to formulate a comprehensive plan for benefiting students from Border and Rural areas.

The Committee recommends that 5 percent supernumerary seats each for the categories of Border Area and Rural Area candidates, subject to minimum of one seat in each course of study, may be reserved on the requried terms & conditions. Expressing his vision, Prof. Karamjeet Singh stated, “It has always been my dream to uplift the children of border and rural areas by providing them access to quality higher education.

Due to a lack of opportunities, many talented students have been deprived of higher education. This decision will pave the way for their brighter future and improve their standard of living.” The Syndicate members unanimously lauded this initiative, recognizing it as a historic decision that will significantly contribute to the betterment of students from these areas.

The Syndicate members also authorised Vice Chancellor to  take anticipatory decisions relating to some urgent cases which require Syndicate approval

Earlier, Registrar Prof. Karanjeet Singh Kahlon extended a warm welcome to all members. On this occasion, he congratulated Vice Chancellor Prof. Karamjeet Singh on his appointment and assured full support in realizing his vision for the university’s progress. Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Palwinder Singh, Syndicate members, officers, and staff members were present on this occasion.

In his address, Prof. Karamjeet Singh outlined his broader vision for student development, stating that along with academic excellence, vocational and employment-oriented courses will be introduced. He stressed the importance of financial independence for students and emphasized skill-based education to ensure that graduates can secure jobs or even become job providers.

Special emphasis will also placed on women’s empowerment, with plans to introduce specific courses to help female students achieve financial independence and create employment opportunities for others. Apart from these key initiatives, the Syndicate also approved teaching and non-teaching promotions and sanctioned 57 Ph.D. degrees in various disciplines.
