Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Dr. Sudesh Dhankhar graced the 3rd National Seminar on Deaf-Blind Advocacy, focusing on education and employment for the differently-abled. The event, held at New Delhi, brought together thought leaders, professionals, and change-makers to discuss ways to foster inclusivity and compassion for Divyangjans.

In his address, Vice President Dhankhar expressed his joy and gratitude for being part of the seminar, emphasizing the importance of education and employment as fundamental rights. He highlighted the immense potential and talent of Divyangjans, stating, “Loss of physical vision can be compensated, but the vision that matters is the one within. When that vision is perverted, dangers emanate.”

Drawing inspiration from the Ramcharitmanas, Dhankhar recited a couplet: “पर हित सरिस धर्म नहिं भाई। पर पीड़ा सम नहिं अधमाई॥” (There is no greater virtue than serving others, and no greater sin than causing pain). He urged everyone to act with empathy and compassion, calling it the highest form of Dharma.

Government Initiatives for Divyangjans

The Vice President lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to the cause of Divyangjans, highlighting several government initiatives aimed at empowering them. These include the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (2016), which introduced measures like special voting queues, braille-enabled EVMs, and home voting facilities. He also mentioned the increase in reservation for Divyangjans in premier educational institutions from 3% to 5%.

Dhankhar praised the establishment of the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (2015) and the National Institute of Mental Health Rehabilitation (2019). He also highlighted the Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan), which aims to make public infrastructure more inclusive.

Paralympics and Sports for Divyangjans

The Vice President celebrated India’s growing participation and success in the Paralympics, noting that Divyangjans have set records and achieved remarkable feats. He announced the upcoming Centre for Disability Sports in Gwalior, which will further promote sports among the differently-abled.

Role of Technology and Community Engagement

Dhankhar emphasized the need to leverage technology, including artificial intelligence, to create an ecosystem that supports Divyangjans. He shared his experience visiting an autism school in Delhi, initiated by Rashmi Das, and praised her efforts in creating a world-class facility. “We need to handhold Divyangjans emotionally and provide them with companionship. Their touch will energize us more than we can imagine,” he said.

Call for Collective Action

The Vice President called for a collective effort from policymakers, educators, caregivers, and NGOs to ensure the holistic development of Divyangjans. He urged Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds to be directed toward initiatives for the differently-abled and stressed the importance of community engagement.

“Our journey to build an inclusive and developed Bharat cannot succeed unless the dreams of Divyangjans are fulfilled,” he said.

Inspiring Examples

Dhankhar cited examples of global icons like Stephen Hawking and Helen Keller, who overcame physical challenges to achieve greatness. He expressed confidence that India has countless such individuals who can inspire the world.

Conclusion

Concluding his speech, the Vice President quoted Mahatma Gandhi: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” He urged everyone to dedicate themselves to the service of Divyangjans, ensuring they live a life of dignity, purpose, and fulfillment.

Dr. Sudesh Dhankhar also expressed her commitment to supporting initiatives for Divyangjans, promising to stay connected with the institute and contribute to the cause. The seminar concluded on a hopeful note, with participants reaffirming their dedication to creating an inclusive and compassionate society for Divyangjans.
