Legal Proceedings and Court Ruling
The petition raised awareness about the CBFC, production company Rajkamal Films International, and the filmmakers. During the hearing, the production business told the court that they had already made corrections. They had obtained a new censor certificate, cut the moment from the film, and hidden the controversial phone number. They argued that the legal issue was therefore redundant.
Nevertheless, Vaageesan's legal team insisted that the student continued to receive calls and demanded payment for the mental agony caused by the film's modifications. In response, the court said it was unable to use the writ petition to force the telecom company to produce records or stop the callers.
According to Justice S. Saunthar, the petitioner would have to file a civil suit to recover damages for mental agony and invasion of privacy. The court also clarified that information for a civil suit cannot be collected during writ procedures.
The Phone Number Mix-Up
The moment in Amaran when a phone number that was at the centre of the controversy surfaced which is believed to belong to actress Sai Pallavi. Sadly, the number shown in the film belonged to Chennai-based B.Tech student V.V. Vagisan and not actress Sai Pallavi. After the film's release on October 31, 2024, Vagisan began receiving a lot of unsolicited calls from across India and even abroad. Many of the callers thought they were speaking to Sai Pallavi. His education, sleep, and mental health were all negatively affected by the constant calls, which disrupted his daily routine.
After enduring this unexpected suffering, Vagisan filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking damages of Rs 1.1 crore for the pain he suffered. Additionally, they asked the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to cancel the film's censorship certificate, as they argued that it violated several provisions of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, including those relating to privacy.
Scene Removed and Film's Digital Release
The filmmakers took immediate action to resolve the matter after the court hearing. After removing the controversial segment from the film, they were granted a new censorship certificate. The sequence showing the phone number has since been removed from Amaran's digital premiere on a renowned streaming service until December 5, 2024.
Despite the legal controversy, Amaran has maintained his strong performance. The film received praise for its compelling plot, which blends action and passion, and its powerful performances, especially from Sai Pallavi.
Directed by Rajkumar Periyasamy, the film is based on a real-life hero and depicts the story of Major Mukunda Varadarajan, played by Sivakarthikeyan. The film has established itself as one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of all time due to its financial success and favorable reviews.
