Migratory birds started arriving in Rupnagar and Nangal wetlands every year from November, which stay here till April and these migratory birds come from different countries. Due to which the trend of nature lovers towards the bird watch center is expected to increase.
While visiting the bird watch center, Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain said that the natural wetland on the banks of Sutlej in Nangal and Rupnagar is the first choice for the residence of migratory and resident birds. This area is a mixture of hilly terrain and plains with a large water body covered with many trees, grasses and bushes.
Which gives this area a unique and supernatural look due to which it attracts nature lovers including birds and animals. He said that a bird festival dedicated to these migratory birds will also be celebrated at the district level during the month of February next year in which a large number of students and youth will be involved so that the youth can be sensitized about the importance of nature.
Himanshu Jain said that migratory birds start coming to Rupnagar and Nangal Wetland every year from November during which census of these birds could also be done. Apart from this, their droppings are also checked for the health care and safety of the birds so that the birds can be protected from diseases if necessary.
Deputy Commissioner said that the wetland area related to the banks of the Sutlej in Rupnagar and Nangal has been declared as Ramsar Wetland, which is spread over an area of 13.65 sq km and 2.89 sq km acres respectively. Whereas Nangal Wetland is a unique habitat due to its pristine blue-green water which is a good habitat for migratory and resident birds and other aquatic flora and fauna.
He said that every year about 2 to 2.5 thousand birds of 20 to 22 species arrive here, for whose protection the people living in these areas are made aware so that the arrival of these birds does not decrease in any way. Deputy Commissioner said that till now the rudysheld duck, common coot, red crested pochard, great crested grebe and grey heron are being seen in the wetlands of the Sutlej area.
For which special arrangements are being made at the bird watch center by the District Forest & Wildlife Department.
