The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the Central University of Punjab, under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, inaugurated the 7th International Conference on Frontiers in Industrial and Applied Mathematics (FIAM-2024) on Thursday. The two-day conference, from November 13 to 14, has attracted a prestigious group of experts, researchers, and students dedicated to advancing industrial and applied mathematics.

The event commenced with a symbolic plant-watering ceremony by Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, joined by prominent guests. The Chief Guest for the opening session was Prof. S.K. Tomar, Vice-Chancellor of JC Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA, Faridabad. Other notable attendees included Prof. M.M. Tripathi from Banaras Hindu University; Dr. A.M. Buhphang, Head of the Department of Mathematics at NEHU; and Prof. Kamal Raj Pardasani, President of FIAM and faculty at MANIT Bhopal, who served as Additional Guests of Honor.

Prof. S.K. Tomar, the keynote speaker, delivered an enlightening talk on the role of mathematics across various disciplines, discussing its linear and non-linear applications in biology, physics, and medicine. He advocated for enhancing teaching methodologies to improve the delivery of mathematical concepts.

Prof. M.M. Tripathi highlighted mathematics' societal importance, stating that it not only fuels scientific progress but also enriches cultural knowledge, underscoring its universal value. Dr. A.M. Buhphang, in an online address, praised the conference as a collaborative platform, encouraging networking and knowledge exchange to promote mathematical research and education.

Speaking as FIAM President, Prof. Kamal Raj Pardasani emphasized connecting real-world challenges to industrial applications through mathematics, inspiring participants to undertake projects with practical relevance to industry and economic growth. In his presidential address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari outlined the enduring role of mathematics in human civilization, especially in India.

He proposed a four-stage approach to learning, encompassing listening to teachers, independent problem-solving, peer discussions, and linking mathematical problems to broader humanities contexts. Prof. Tiwari emphasized that mathematics should address three societal pillars: economic, social, and disciplinary, envisioning its potential impact on multiple domains.

At the outset, Dr. Sachin, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, shared details of the conference theme, noting that 147 students from across the country have registered and will have the opportunity to engage with distinguished speakers from India and abroad. In closing, Prof. Gauree Shankar delivered the formal vote of thanks.

The conference includes five plenary sessions and four technical sessions where experts will discuss how mathematical advancements drive progress in sectors like engineering and technology. FIAM-2024 will also feature paper presentations from emerging researchers and students, offering them a platform to present their work and gain insights from leading mathematicians and industry professionals.

The valedictory session is scheduled for November 14, 2024.
