Indian-American Professor Shailaja Paik Wins US Genius Grant For Dalit Studies
Shailaja Paik, a historian and professor at the University of Cincinnati, has received an $800,000 “genius” grant from the MacArthur Foundation to write about the challenges faced by Dalit women in the country.
The foundation annually awards the fellowship to individuals with exceptional achievement or potential. Announcing the fellowship, the foundation said, “Through her focus on the multifaceted experiences of Dalit women, Shailaja Paik has illuminated the enduring nature of caste discrimination and the forces that perpetuate untouchability.”

About Shailaja Paik
Shailaja Paik was born in 1973 or 1974. There is no clear information about this. She is an Indian historian of modern Indian history. Shailaja Paik focuses on the interrelationships of class, sexuality, and caste, with a special emphasis on Dalit experiences and perspectives. Shailaja Paik is currently the Charles Phelps Taft Distinguished Research Professor of History. Along with this, she is engaged in the Department of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Asian Studies at the University of Cincinnati. Shailaja Paik is a MacArthur Fellow in 2024.
Shailaja Paik's Life

Shailaja Paik was born in a Dalit family in Pohegaon, Maharashtra, India. She was one of four daughters in her family. Her family then moved to Pune, where she grew up in a "one-room house in a slum area" in Yerawada. Paik's parents, especially her father, encouraged all four of his daughters to pursue higher education.
Shailaja Paik completed her B.A. in 1994 and M.A. in 1996 from Savitribai Phule Pune University. She then completed her PhD in 2007 from the University of Warwick.
Shailaja Paik first went to the US in 2005 on a fellowship from Emory University.
