The 18th National Statistics Day was on Saturday celebrated across all the districts of Kashmir with great enthusiasm on the theme, ‘Use of Data for Decision Making.’ National Statistics Day is observed annually on June 29 in honor of Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, a pioneering Indian statistician whose contributions to statistics and economic planning have been invaluable.

On the occasion, a number of events were held in all the districts wherein the pivotal role of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation was highlighted. At Baramulla, a mega function was held at Dak Bungalow Baramulla, which was presided over by the District Development Commissioner (DDC) Baramulla, Minga Sherpa as the chief guest.

 In his address, the DDC emphasized the importance of data-driven decision-making in governance and development. He underscored the necessity of reliable and timely statistics in shaping policies that cater to the diverse needs of society.

Minga Sherpa lauded the efforts of statistical officers and officials in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of data collected and urged them to continue their dedication to this crucial task. Additional District Development Commissioner Baramulla, Syed Qamar Sajad and Chief Planning Officer Baramulla, Javed Ahmad who were also present at the event shared their insights on the significance of data in planning and development processes.

They highlighted the need for continuous improvement in data collection methods and encouraged all stakeholders to collaborate for enhancing the quality of statistics. Various concerned officers and officials actively participated in the function, reflecting a strong commitment to leveraging statistical data for effective decision-making.

The function concluded with a renewed pledge by all participants to uphold the principles of statistical accuracy and integrity, aiming to foster a culture of data-driven decision-making across various sectors.

At Kulgam, National Statistics Day was celebrated jointly by District Statistics and Evaluation Office Kulgam and Chief Planning office Kulgam today in the Conference Hall, at Mini secretariat, Kulgam.The objective of celebrating this day was to sensitize the general people about the role of Statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation.

During the event, the District Statistics and Evaluation Officer, Kulgam addressed the participants and highlighted contributions made by Late Prof P.C Mahalanobis and reminded the participants about the use of statistics and its importance in various fields of economic planning for the development and well-being of people.

He also emphasized the field functionaries to collect and compile data by improving its reliability for real time assessment of performance in various sectors of the economy.The Chief Planning Officer and other officers also provided their views on the notable contributions made by Professor Late P.C Mahalanobis and impressed the participants on the better understanding of Statistical information emanating from official statistics and for facilitating evidence based decision making in the formulation of planning and policy formulation.

At Shopian, the District Statistics & Evaluation Office Shopian organized an event to commemorate 18th National Statistics Day at Mini Secretariat Shopian in which Statistical Staff posted in different offices participated.

The event commenced with a warm welcome address by District Statistics & Evaluation Officer (DSEO) Shopian, Bilkeesa Zahoor who underscored the significance of Statistics in governance and policy making. DSEO while speaking on the occasion stressed upon the collection of actual and accurate data which is the basic need for accurate planning.

Shedding light on the theme ‘Use of Data for Decision Making,’ she said the celebration of this day aims to educate people on the importance of knowing the basics of Statistics as it plays a major role in the informed policy decisions, efficient governance and improvement in the quality of life of citizens.

On the occasion, Officers and officials paid rich tributes to the legendary Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis, a great Indian Statistician for his contribution in Statistics. At Kupwara, a function was today organized at D.C Office Kupwara under the chairmanship of Chief Planning Officer, Parvaiz Ahmad to commemorate the birth anniversary of the father of Indian Statistics, Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis.

On the occasion, a pledge was taken to acknowledge the importance of Statistics on our understanding of the world and decision making process in every domain of our lives. The CPO and other officers spoke and highlighted the importance of celebrating the National Statistics Day.

Chief Planning Officer, Parvaiz Ahmad; District Statistics & Evaluation Officer, Bashir Ahmad Malik, AD Planning, Ghulam Nabi Najar and other concerned officials were present on the occasion.
