Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla presides over 2568th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha

Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti Bauddh Sewa Sangh, Shimla in association with Indo-Tibet Friendship Society, Shimla organized a function on the occasion of 2568th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha at Dorje Drak Buddhist Vihar, Panthaghati, Shimla, today. Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

While greeting the people on Buddha Jayanti, Governor Shukla said that Lord Buddha's teachings of compassion, peace and enlightenment have transcended centuries, cultures and borders, guiding millions on the path to inner peace and universal brotherhood. He highlighted that Buddha's message is more relevant today than ever as we navigate the complexities of the modern world, which is often fraught with conflict, misunderstanding and materialism.

Governor Shukla said that Lord Buddha's life and teachings emphasizes the importance of introspection, ethical living and the pursuit of wisdom. "His Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path offer a timeless framework for achieving personal and collective harmony," Shukla said.   He said that "These principles encourage us to confront our suffering, understand its causes, and follow a path that leads to the cessation of suffering."

He said that in the present context, these teachings inspire us to foster a spirit of tolerance, empathy, and mutual respect. They remind us of the impermanence of worldly attachments and the value of living a life rooted in mindfulness and compassion, he added.

The Governor appreciated the efforts of the Buddhist communities of Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti and the Indo-Tibet Friendship Society, recognizing their significant role in preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Buddhism. He said that their dedication to maintaining the spiritual and cultural traditions of Lord Buddha's teachings is commendable. 

It is through their efforts that the values of peace, non-violence and compassion continue to thrive and inspire new generations,” he said. Shri Shukla said that the festival is a testament to the enduring friendship and cultural exchange between the people of India and Tibet. 

"Through such gatherings, our shared history and cultural bonds are strengthened. It promotes greater understanding and unity," the Governor remarked. He appealed to the people to adopt the teachings of Lord Buddha in their daily lives and work towards a world characterized by compassion, wisdom, and peace.

The Governor honoured Yangsi Rinpoche on the occasion and presented the Bharat Tibet Maitri Samman-2024 to Assistant Professor Dr. Shravan Kumar from the Indian community and Monk Shedup Wangyal from the Tibetan community.

Earlier, Vice President of India Tibet Friendship Society, Shimla Tsering Dorje welcomed the Governor. Member of Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti Buddhist Seva Sangh, Shimla Gyan Negi, presented a vote of thanks.

On the occasion, cultural programs were also presented by the students of Lahaul-Spiti studying in Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla and the students of Tibetan School, Shimla. The Governor also offered prayers at Dorje Drak Buddhist Vihar.

President of India Tibet Friendship Society Shimla and President of Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti Buddhist Seva Sangh V.S. Negi and other prominent people were also present on the occasion.
