Canada will continue its commitment to welcoming newcomers by maintaining its annual intake of 485,000 new immigrants in 2024, just as it did in 2023. However, the country has ambitious plans to increase these numbers to 500,000 by 2025, as revealed in its recently unveiled immigration plans for the period 2024-2026.

Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, announced that immigration levels will be capped at 500,000 from 2026 onwards. This decision to maintain and then elevate immigration quotas underscores Canada's dedication to fostering diverse and sustainable population growth.

India stands as Canada's largest source of immigration and international students, positioning Indians as the primary beneficiaries of these immigration targets. A record number of 281,135 newcomers under the economic category and 114,000 under the family category are expected in the upcoming years.

In the previous year, more than 118,000 Indians secured Canadian permanent residency (PR), constituting a significant quarter of the 437,120 newcomers welcomed into Canada.

These new immigration objectives will result in an annual population increase of 1.3 percent, pushing Canada's population past the 40-million mark. However, the country simultaneously grapples with a pressing housing shortage issue.

Despite public opinion polls expressing concerns about the housing crisis, the government led by Justin Trudeau remains committed to maintaining high immigration levels. Marc Miller affirmed, "Canada will continue to welcome newcomers and ensure that they are supported in their new lives." Nevertheless, he acknowledged that capping immigration at 500,000 is a measure taken to account for housing, infrastructure planning, and sustainable population growth.

Through this comprehensive plan, Canada aims to strike the right balance between fostering economic growth and addressing the challenges of its ever-expanding population. Furthermore, in 2024, Canada will set a new record by welcoming 76,115 new refugees, emphasizing its continued commitment to humanitarian efforts and inclusivity.

Canada's immigration system remains highly sought after, as demonstrated by over 5.2 million applications processed worldwide for permanent residence, temporary residence, and citizenship last year, reflecting the nation's enduring appeal as a destination for individuals seeking new opportunities and a better life.
