Avinash Rai Khanna, a former member of Rajya Sabha and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader, here today hailed the changes proposed by the Union government in the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Evidence Act. Avinash Rai Khanna, who is Vice-Chairman, Indian Red Cross Society, was addressing students of Rayat Bahra University School of Law students here today.

Khanna, who has been a practicing lawyer, cited instances from his personal experience as a lawyer of how people get away after making wrong depositions in court even under oath and if the accused is acquitted, no action is taken against the persons making wrong deposition. He said that the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Evidence Act were enacted during colonial rule and had over the decades lost relevance and needed to be revisited and amended according to the ground situation and the Indian scenario.

He said the Narendra Modi government had taken initiative to reform and amend the Indian Penal Code, the Criminal Procedure Code and the Indian Evidence Act by the Home Minister. He called upon the students to send in their suggestions on the amendments that they felt should be made to the union law ministry so that these could be taken into consideration.

Khanna, was a member of the 14th Lok Sabha from Hoshiarpur constituency of Punjab, also answered queries by students during an interactive session after his address. Earlier, on his arrival Khanna was welcomed by Gurvinder Singh Bahra, Chancellor, and Dr Parvinder Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the Rayat Bahra University. Prof M S Bains were also present on this occasion.
