On September 28, it is celebrated all over the world as World Rabies Day. World Rabies Day is celebrated all over the world to spread awareness regarding this infectious disease. It is mandatory to tell the people or the world regarding this deadly disease.

Theme: One Health, Zero Death

World Rabies Day, a global health observance that was started in the year of 2007 to raise awareness about the world's deadliest infectious disease and bring together partners to enhance prevention, cure and control efforts worldwide.

Transmission of the virus:

It is a virus that is transmitted through direct contact (such as through splitting skin or gummy membranes in the eyes, nose, or mouth) with saliva or brain/nervous system tissue from an infected animal.

Usually, people get this virus from the bite of a rabid animal. But in a few cases, it is possible for people to get rabies from non-bite divestments,which involve scratches, abrasions, or open wounds that are exposed to saliva or other potentially infectious material from a rabid animal. Other types of contact, such as petting a rabid animal or contact with the blood, urine, or feces of a rabid animal, are not connected with risk for infection and are not considered to be exposures of concern for rabies.

Things you should know about Rabies:

  1. Rabies is the vaccine- preventable disease, Zoonotic and viral disease.
  2. Once it is recognised in the clinic, then it is 100% virtually fatal.
  3. 99% of cases of this virus are spread from domestic dogs. They are responsible for this disease among humans.

Who Coined the Rabies Disease?

Louis Pasteur, coined this disease when he was between the ages of 55 and 65, He developed microbiology by applying it to medicine and surgery. He established that diseases were caused by microorganisms, then he sought to recognize and find a means of fighting them. His final achievement was rabies, which he had there.

The virus which is responsible for this disease is the Rabies Virus.

What does this virus do to humans?

When a person gets infected with this infectious disease, it initially attacks or affects the person’s brain. The person starts to fear the water. It is also called hydrophobia among people. If any disease can acquire our nervous system, then it could become very easy for the virus to control our every action. Laterally, it can lead to harmful consequences in humans. As a result, it can lead to death.

September 28 is World Rabies Day, a global health observance started in 2007 to raise awareness about the world's deadliest infectious disease and bring partners to enhance prevention and control efforts worldwide.

Also, the MCD( Municipal Corporation of Delhi) has decided to organise a free anti- Rabies camp for stray dogs and pet dogs. Moreover, according to a senior MCD official, the MCD's veterinary services department and the Delhi government's animal husbandry department are working together to organise the free vaccination programme (GNCTD).
