Japan's former Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, who had been shot throughout the election campaign, has now passed away. Yes, you read that right. Shinzo Abe has left for a heavenly abode on July 8. Abe, 67, was shot in the back when he was speaking at a dull traffic island in the western city of Nara by a man brandishing an ostensibly homemade gun.

Abe has taken to a hospital right away following the assault. The man believed to have attacked Abe has been detained by police. Tetsuya Yamagami, a resident of Nara, was named by police as the shooter's suspect.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences for the passing of former Japanese leader Shinzo Abe on Friday, saying that Abe dedicated his life to improving the globe and that India would spend one day of national mourning in his honour on July 9. PM Modi took to Twitter to express his sorrow over the former Japan PM's death.

“I am shocked and saddened beyond words at the tragic demise of one of my dearest friends, Shinzo Abe. He was a towering global statesman, an outstanding leader, and a remarkable administrator. He dedicated his life to make Japan and the world a better place,” wrote the PM.

“My association with Mr. Abe goes back many years. I had got to know him during my tenure as Gujarat CM and our friendship continued after I became PM. His sharp insights on economy and global affairs always made a deep impression on me,”  he added.

The ex-Japanese PM had a special relationship with India as he was conferred with Padma Vibhushan in 2021 and the Netaji Award in 2022.
