Deputy Commissioner (DC) and CEO, LAHDC, Kargil Baseer ul Haq Choudhary on Sunday said that there is need to follow proper traffic etiquettes and observance of traffic rules so as to ensure sound traffic regulation and to minimize the instances of accidents on roads.The Deputy Commissioner stated this during a live traffic awareness programme in Kargil town organized by the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) Kargil in collaboration with Police Department Kargil, Traffic Police Kargil and Nun Kun Driving Institute Kargil.
Superintendent of Police Kargil Dr Vinod Kumar, Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Kargil Khadim Hussain, Inspector Muhammad Nissar of Traffic Police Kargil and other concerned officers were present on the occasion.The DC said that the purpose of this awareness programme is to sensitize the general public, particularly the drivers, about the significance of observing traffic rules and to enlighten them about the New Traffic Act.
He said that efforts are being made to raise traffic awareness among masses through various mediums.During the awareness programme, officials of MVD Kargil, Traffic Police, volunteers and students made people aware of the New Traffic Act and its rules and regulations. Professional drivers and daily road users were enlightened about the Motor Vehicle laws and escalated fines. People were urged to observe traffic rules in letter and spirit besides wearing seatbelts and helmets for a safe drive.Pertinently, bikers and scooterists without helmet were penalized to engage as road awareness assistants for two hours.The DC instructed the ARTO Kargil to continue with the process of traffic awareness as and when required by involving more and more volunteers and students which he said would go a long way in reducing the instances of road accidents and other traffic related issues in Kargil town as well as rural areas.Later, the DC along with the SP Kargil and ARTO Kargil distributed free helmets sponsored by Nun Kun Driving Institute among the riders of two wheelers not wearing helmets.
