Banihal Avalanche Tragedy: Body of policeman retrieved, Toll 8

Authorities on Saturday said that one more body was recovered from the debris of an avalanche at Jawahar Tunnel along Srinagar-Jammu highway, taking the death toll to eight.An official said that the body of policeman Parvaiz Ahmad, was recovered today from the Jawahar Tunnel area.The avalanche had hit the north portal of Jawahar Tunnel on the Qazigund side in Kulgam district on Thursday evening. The ten persons comprising six policemen, two fire service personnel and two prisoners were buried alive.The rescue teams saved two police personnel on Friday, while seven bodies were also recovered.Three police personnel identified as SPO Ghulam Nabi Mir No. 505/K S/O Ali Mohammad Mir R/O Kulgam, (02) SPO Mohammad Khaleel No. 315/K S/O Assadullah Paddar R/O Immo Veerinag, SgCt Mohammad Maqbool No. 346/Kgm R/O Bandipora were rescued who are stable now. While as seven dead bodies which included 05 policemen have been retrieved from the devastating avalanche. The deceased were identified as (01) Constable Arshid Gul No. 1000/Kgm R/O Tuli Nowpora Kulgam (02) HC Muzaffar Ahmed No. 125/Kgm R/O Muniward Anantnag (03) Constable Firdous Ahmed Bhat No. 181 (Driver Fire & Emergency Service) S/O Gul Mohammad R/O Y.K.Pora Qazigund (04) SgCt Fayaz Ahmed Parray No. 1571 (Fireman Fire & Emergency Service) S/O Assadullah Parray R/O Chandeyan Qazigund, (05) SgCt Shabnum Yousuf Ganie No. 622/ IRP 14th Bn S/O Mohammad Yausuf Ganie R/O Hillar Kokernag.Ironically two persons arrested and in the police custody also died in this incident .Necessary legal formalities for the death of the two persons have been initiated under law.One police personnel namely Sgct Parvaiz Ahmad of Ganderbal is still missing.
