Kiran Choudhry, Leader of the Haryana Congress Legislature Party, has dismissed the decision of the Union Government to scrap the import duty on wheat as a “reprehensible extension of the pronounced anti-farmer agenda of the BJP-led NDA Government,” and demanded its immediate rollback.In a statement issued here today, the former excise and taxation minister said the decision would have suicidal effect on the farming community, which is already under reeling under financial stress due to failed crops, wrong policies pursued by the BJP Governments at the Centre and in the state, and the debilitating effect of demonetisation of currency notes on the growers. “The decision to scrap wheat import duty is bad news for the farmers as cheap imports would turn the traders away from buying their produce. After getting cheap wheat from other countries, the government generally dithers over giving full MSP to the farmers, citing one excuse or the other. The decision is a reprehensible extension of the pronounced anti-farmer agenda of the BJP-led NDA Government, and should be immediately rolled back”, she demanded.Should the NDA Government refuse to roll back the decision, the farmers will be left with no option but to resort to agitation and the Congress Party would stand by them, Mrs Choudhry added.
