To commemorate the birth anniversary of sixth guru of Sikhs, Guru Har Gobind Sahib Ji a procession was organized by the management committee of Gurdwara Chevin patshshi, Ludhiana. The nagar kirtan passed through different roads and streets starting from Gurdwara Sahib via Khud Mohalla, Rarri Mohalla, 3 No. Division, Baba Than Singh Chowk, Ram Nagar. A unique feature was observed towards Green Nagar Kirtan-a team of over 25 young boys and girls wearing green ribbons, gloves and carrying biodegradable bags were witnessed cleaning the roads and collecting the garbage from and near the stalls after the procession passed by. The young volunteers were quite enthusiastic to collect the disposables, and other left-over materials. This initiative was taken by EcoSikh, a Washington based organization for a healthy ecological environment.
A huge number of devotees arranged “Langar” for the sangat and in the process laced the roads with Styrofoam disposables, wrappers etc. The EcoSikh volunteers silently and consistently cleaned the roads after the Nagar Kirtan and in addition to that, requested the Langar organizers to celebrate the events keeping the ecological health of the city in mind.Gurpreet Kaur, the organizer of the event shared that more such events will be organized in future also. More and more people are coming forward to join hands for this noble cause and healthy environment.Harminder Singh Sethi, President of the Gurdwara applauded the endeavors of young volunteers of EcoSikh with whose efforts streets were made cleaner from littered ones A great change of low usage of disposables was also seen. People have moved to reusable glasses and containers. This clearly sent a message to the world to discard the use of cups & plates of plastic/Styrofoam which are non biodegradable and put a stop to heaps of garbage piling up on the roads.
