IT case not chargesheet but mere complaint, say senior Punjab Congress leaders

Accuse Jaitley & Co. of deliberately portraying wrong picture to voters

Alleging a planned conspiracy to defame the Punjab Congress president, senior party leaders on Saturday accused Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley of deliberately leaking the Income Tax department complaint to the media as a `chargesheet’ in a bid to mislead the people.Their remarks came as Captain Amarinder Singh’s counsel and senior Supreme Court advocate Atul Nanda pointed out that, contrary to certain media reports, the complaint filed by the IT department in a Ludhiana court is not a chargesheet. “It is just a complaint, which the court is yet to take cognizance of,” he pointed out.Dubbing the leakage of the complaint as the handiwork of Jaitley and his dirty works department, party leaders Laal Singh, Sunil Jakhar and Kewal Dhillon said it was a clear attempt to portray a wrong picture to the electorate of poll-bound Punjab.Questioning the timing of the IT complaint, the leaders said the department, which had done nothing for the past two years since there was absolutely no truth in the allegations, was now twisting facts to suit the BJP-SAD interests by portraying Captain Amarinder in bad light ahead of the state Assembly elections."Thousands of complaints are filed in courts everyday but none are released to the Media and projected as chargesheets," they pointed out, adding that Jaitley & Co. were well aware that their case would not stand legal scrutiny and were trying to spread false canards out of sheer political frustration and vendetta.Captain Amarinder had on Friday himself rejected the charges of foreign assets and the filing of the IT complaint as malafide and politically motivated. He had also said he would request the court to summon the finance minister and other senior officials of the IT department to expose all those who were part of the conspiracy. "I have known about this conspiracy for the past two years and was waiting for this opportunity to get all these people on the stand," he had said, reacting to the filing of the complaint by the IT department.
